Vintage, retro, preloved and second-hand are often used as if they mean the same thing. They overlap, but they describe different things—and understanding the difference makes shopping and selling much clearer.
What does vintage mean?
Vintage usually refers to age. A widely used commercial rule is around 20 years old or more, although there is no universal legal definition covering every marketplace or seller.
That means genuine early-2000s clothing is now entering the vintage category. Age alone does not make a garment rare, collectible or valuable.
What does retro mean?
Retro usually describes a newer item made in the style of an earlier era. A jacket produced today with 1990s colour blocking can look retro without being vintage.
Retro is therefore about design reference rather than necessarily age.
What does second-hand mean?
Second-hand simply means previously owned. A six-month-old coat can be second-hand without being vintage, while a 1990s sweatshirt can be both vintage and second-hand.
What does preloved mean?
Preloved is a softer retail term for second-hand. It usually tells you that an item had a previous owner, not when it was made.
Can one garment fit more than one category?
Yes. A 1990s Adidas track jacket bought from a previous owner can accurately be described as vintage, second-hand and preloved. A brand-new reproduction inspired by the same jacket might be retro but not vintage or second-hand.
Why does the distinction matter?
Clear terminology helps buyers understand what they are paying for. Somebody searching for original vintage may care about period labels and construction, while another shopper may simply want the look and be happy with a modern retro-style piece.
For sellers, accurate wording reduces confusion and makes listings easier to trust. If you are unsure of an exact era, say what you can actually support rather than forcing a vintage claim.
What should you check when buying genuine vintage?
- brand and care labels
- country of manufacture
- style or product codes
- construction and hardware
- fabric composition
- measurements
- condition and repairs
